On the eleventh hour...thank you veterans

From a time when we could thank our veterans for something, instead of reducing ourselves to thanking them for nothing. And in so doing, the true worth of freedom is being forgotten. Thanks to those who gave the last full measure of devotion for we who too quickly forget.

“Have you news of my boy Jack?”
Not this tide.
“When d’you think that he’ll come back?”
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

“Has any one else had word of him?”
Not this tide.
For what is sunk will hardly swim,
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

“Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?”
None this tide,
Nor any tide,
Except he did not shame his kind —
Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.

Then hold your head up all the more,
This tide,
And every tide;
Because he was the son you bore,
And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!

That's all for today. Just the thanks.

Thank You to all who have sacrificed so much for the freedom of this country and for the freedom and rights of people around the world.

  2. Very touching. A very nice tribute. I haven't seen that movie. It looked like Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter playing his son. I'm not sure what you mean by thanking them for nothing, but I have a feeling it's not meant to disparage the veterans, given the overall sentiments behind the post.

  3. yes it is Daniel Radcliffe. I can't watch the movie without crying. It is a very well done movie and it does speak to the sacrifices made not only by the veteran's themselves but by their families.

  4. It's from a British television movie named My Boy Jack. I recommend it to anyone. And yes, the remark was more a slight against a generation of Americans who sit on the bleachers and criticize and complain about everything, calling every war unjust and wrong, and then turn around and say we thank our veterans. For those who say America has always been about unjust and illegal wars, I can't help but wonder what they thank the veterans for. Since I don't feel that way about every war and everything America has ever done, I can feel no hesitation about thanking the veterans for doing everything they did, and their families who sacrificed so much.

  5. That was a moving tribute. Thank you. I think I understand what you meant. As an aside, I didn't realize Radcliffe had been in any movies except Harry Potter. I'll look for that.
