CNN Looks at Pearl Harbor

Got this link to a little CNN.com overview of the attack in my emails.  I always get a kick out of the general 'let's be reasonable and look at all sides' approach we give to everything except: Slavery, desegregation, the Holocaust, and Nazi Germany in general. In recent years we've tried to add the Atomic bombs and our treatment of the American Indians to the 'case closed, no further discussion' departments. Everything else, including Japan's imperialism and reign of unbridled terror, is met with 'it's easy to see it from their point of view if you try.'  Anyway, interesting slide show of photos and images from that day.  One was especially interesting, showing women firefighters fighting the flames.  That's right, women firefighters.   Don't know if they were regulars, just women called on to help, or what.  It would be interesting to find out.  Most of what we think we know of history makes file labels look comprehensive.  It sure wouldn't be the image we are used to seeing as we look back with scorn on our sexist past.

  1. Somewhere at some point I was told that during the World Wars, or at least the second one, women stepped up to fill the jobs that would normally have been reserved to men, as the men fought the wars. Wish I knew where to research that.
