It was in the winter of 1987 that David Lee Roth brought his first solo act through Columbus. We missed seeing Van Halen in their final tour - being unable to afford the million dollars for tickets to their smash hit tour for 1984. The solo concert wasn't the same, but it was something. We camped outside the old Buzzard's Nest music store waiting for tickets to go on sale the next morning, complete with board games and plenty vittles for passing time until the doors opened. Folks even had a list all made up so we could all keep our place in line while staying warm and snug in our cars.
That is, until the family from Deliverance came by and insisted they got there first. No amount of pleading with them would work - there was no list, it was first come first serve. We would have let them have the tickets and gone back to our cars just to stay warm, but they refused to help by directing future patrons to our list. Eventually, everyone had to get out of their cars and hold their place. One of my best friends and I took turns. All thanks to folks who could only repeat, time after time when pressed, that they were 'here to see David Lee Roth!' It reminded me of Woodcock's stubborn persistence in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; though I felt he had more going for him than they did. Anyhow, here's a bit from the band in their heyday, when all was right with the world; a nice summer rock song for a cold, snowy day:
Ah those were the days!
