To my two favorite dads:
As I said elsewhere, I'm sure there will be more down the line. For now these are my favorites. I do miss my dad, but am thrilled at the young man my son has become. I think he will be a splendid father, and am thankful for the granddaughter he and my daughter-in-law have brought into the world. Just as I am thankful for my dad, and all he brought to us. I pray only the best for them and their family and the family with which God has blessed me.
Happy first Father's day as a grandfather, Dave! Hope it's a good one for ya.
ReplyDeleteIt was. Though it was a bit weird wishing my son happy father's day. Sort of a Calvin and Hobbes moment.
DeleteMy three kids all contacted me today to wish me a Happy Father's Day. They think of me as having been a good father, and I am grateful for their gratitude. But when I look back at the years I spent trying my best to do right by them, I often am aware of more failure than success. I had no good role models to follow --- my father and my grandfathers abandoned their families--- and I often felt lost at sea. But the kids turned out all right, by the grace of God. There's something to be said for just plugging away, even if you don't really know what you're doing. God loves a willing heart. So yeah, happy Father's Day to one and all. ------ G. Poulin
ReplyDeleteG. Poulin, a quote I just found: "Fatherhood is not something perfect men do, but something that perfects the man."
DeleteChildren are full of love and pretty forgiving as long as they know you're trying. It's all any of us mortals can do. =)
Like Nate said, I think children can be awfully forgiving if they know the parents are doing it for the right reasons out of love. My parents were hardly perfect in the decision making department, especially when it came to perpetually relocating for no good reason. Yet I always knew they thought they were doing it for the best, and that covers a multitude of errors.
DeleteHappy Belated Father's Day to you and your son now!! Happy to hear all is well with little peanut and she's home with her family :)
