On this day in music history

May 9, 1962, an obscure record store manager sends a telegram from a London post office to a backwoods seaport that he has secured a recording contract for one of the local music groups.  The rest, as they say, is history.

  1. And then there was the guy who passed on them because "bands with guitars are on their way out."

    Ooof.

Love the Beatles, though. Something simple and decent in their work that deserves to last.

    1. I believe that was from the Decca audition. They chose an artist from London because they also didn't think a group from of all places Liverpool would ever make it big in England, much less anywhere else. The good news is that almost anyone remotely attached to the Beatles has been able to at least have a side-career of being remotely attached to the Beatles.

  2. Producer George Martin initially thought that their music was rubbish, and nearly passed on them himself. But he found their personalities attractive and their company enjoyable, so he agreed to sign them anyway. Thanks George.

    1. I've heard that. It has been universally agreed upon that they were pretty amateur and rough around the edges. Exactly what turned them around between now and their song Please Please Me is still debated. I wouldn't think it a stretch to assume Martin.
