Those Commie Pinkos

I always got the feeling that liberals in America had far more scorn for their Archie Bunker stereotypes worried about Communism than actual Communism.  And there were more who seemed to be pretty warm to the whole Communist alternative to the evil West.  I knew (and yes, liked) a girl in college who had a giant picture of Lenin in her apartment.  She loved Russia and the whole Bolshevik thing.  Like many who felt similar, she saw all of the unfortunate results of Communism in Russia, China and other nations as the fault of the Evil U.S.A.  Anyway, this little reflection on those hip Communists defenders brought back some memories.  I wonder how prevalent Communism is on campuses today.  FWIW, I've learned with hanging around Orthodox Christians not to ever, ever take Communism lightly.  Just don't do it.

  1. "[G]iant picture of Lennon in her apartment."

Now wait...to clear up a confusion, would that be a giant picture of "John Lennon" (who held some vaguely communist beliefs, I think), or "Vladimir Lenin," leader of the Bolshevik revolution, head of the Soviet Union, etc.?

  2. Heh. I think she had one of Lennon too. Corrected that. :)

  3. Just checking. Both would have been appropriate for a person in that line of thought. :P

  4. Huh, chalk another one up for Orthodox. It's certainly not to Catholicism credit how many prominent members seem way too cozy with the second great heresy.

  5. I've found those Orthodox Christians I've met see things in radically different ways. I can understand why the Orthodox are not thrilled with anyone who is soft on Communism. To them, that's like telling someone who is Jewish 'Sure it was evil, but on the other hand...." I forget how many millions of Orthodox died during the Communist reign of the USSR. And many of those as a direct result of their faith and resistance to the atheism of the regime.
